Kerala State Quick Facts

Kerala State is the location where Thomas Abraham has his mission work. It is a small state in the most southern tip of India. It is believed that Apostle Thomas came to India in Kerala about 52 A. D. It is believed that he baptized seven Hindu priests and started seven churches in different parts of Kerala. He was later killed by Hindus at Madras a neighboring State. Because of Apostle Thomas’ visit, Kerala enjoys one of the largest percent of Christians in India, about 25-30%. Kerala is known for tourism. It is a tropical place with trees and vegetation everywhere.

Kerala has primarily two seasons: summer and rainy. They receive an average of 200 to 300 inches of rainfall every year. The four-month monsoon season begins in June and extends through September. There are 44 big and small rivers flowing in this State. The Arabian Sea borders on the West and Indian Ocean on the South.

There is nearly 100 per cent literacy among citizens which is the highest of any state in India. Rice, tapioca, fish, meat, chicken and vegetables are the main food. Rubber, coconut, teak and rosewood trees are plentiful. Pineapple, different kinds of bananas, cashew nuts and all types of spices are cultivated in Kerala. While the official national language is Hindi, the main language in Kerala is Malayalam with English also widely used. The main games played are soccer, cricket, volleyball and basketball. The capital city is Trivandrum.
